Innovation and system boundaries

We were having a long and abstract conversation about radical innovation yesterday and how it can be enabled by redrawing the boundaries of the system under consideration. We identified a pragmatic and accessible example.
Michelin’s Tweel has combined the functions of the tyre and the wheel to offer a radical new approach – with lots of interesting applications and whole new areas of freedom to explore. Just by redrawing the system boundary to include the wheel as well as the tyre.
